Students prepare for Spring Dance Showcase

The University’s Theatre and Dance Department is proud to announce its annual spring Choreographer’s Showcase. Student directors Catharine Cipolla ’14 and Liz Higgins ’15 have been working in conjunction with dance faculty to bring the show together.

Nineteen talented students from the Dance Composition course offered in the spring have created their own original pieces to reflect what they have learned in the course.

“Each showcase is vastly different from the next because new choreographers are featured each semester with novel ideas different than the semester before them,” Cipolla said.

“It is a great experience because some of the choreographers are also dancers in other pieces,” Associate Professor of Dance and concert director Er-Dong Hu said. “It’s a great experience because you get to see what it’s like to be both the choreographer and the dancer, and to get that balance between the two.”

Dance Composition is rigorous, involving outside group projects in addition to the main assignment to choreograph a piece for the concert.

“Each semester presents a unique experience because there are different dancers, different choreographers and different motives,” Ciopolla said.

Along with the Dance Composition students, Associate Professor of Dance Kelly Knox and Abigail Mason ’11 are excited to share their own original work.

“My favorite part of choreographing for this show was working with this particular group of dancers,” Knox said. “I had the best time in the creative process because all of the dancers brought their willingness to make suggestions, engage, throw each other around and create with me.”

Students can attend the spring 2014 Choreographer’s Showcase tonight at 8 and tomorrow at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. in Tustin Studio Theatre. Tickets can be purchased at all Campus Box Office locations and online.
