The women’s cross country team kicked off its long season at the Bison Open on Aug. 30 at the West Fields. Saint Francis (Pa.), Susquehanna University, and Juniata College competed along with the Bison, who took eight of the top 11 finishers in the race.

Coming in first for the Bison was Katie Jessee ’15 (17:05), with an impressive runner-up performance to the winner out of Saint Francis (16:56). Brennan Sharkey ’18 (17:09) finished shortly after in third place.

“I think everyone on the team raced really well and it was awesome how encouraging and supportive everyone was,” Sharkey said. “I was really nervous before, but it was great and more comforting being able to run with Katie during the race because she really helped to push me. I think overall it was a really good team effort and I’m excited for the rest of the season!”

Sarah Chandler ’17, Justine Schnell ’15, Maeve Greeley ’18, Zoe Gaston ’15, Becky Snelson ’15, and Meghan Carroll ’16 all rounded out the eight Bison in the top 11 spots.

“The Bison Open was a really good first meet for everyone,” Chandler said. “I was very pleased with my performance and I believe that most of my other teammates were also very happy with their first races. This is only the first meet of the year and we seem to be starting off strong, and I am excited to see how the rest of our season plays out.”

The Bison will be traveling to Northville, Mich. to run in the Detroit Mercy Invitational tomorrow.
