Field hockey defeats Boston, falls to Drexel; still undefeated in League play

The field hockey team remains an undefeated threat in Patriot League play after an extremely impressive 5-2 home win against the Boston University Terriers on Oct. 4. However, the Bison struggled to produce an equivalent offensive effort in their second match the next day against Drexel in a 6-0 loss at home.

The team achieved a great deal of success against Boston, as five different players were able to find the back of the net and secure a win against a team the Bison had never beaten before in conference play. From the first to the last minutes of the match, the Orange and Blue dominated the stats, recording a 22-3 shot advantage and limiting their opponent to only two shots on goal the entire game.

Multiple players exploited a tremendous offensive push and found the back of the net following the lead of Abby Watson ’16 in the opening minutes. Lexie Curry ’18, Liz Wills ’15, Amie Pritchard ’15, and Kiersten Sydnor ’16 each secured a goal to lead the Orange and Blue to victory. Despite the discrepancy in shot statistics, the match was played quite evenly until the Bison were able to pull ahead late into the second half.

The team stayed at home to take on Drexel in the second fast-paced contest of the weekend. The Bison defense was put to the test much more in this match, and the Orange and Blue fell short of keeping the ball out of their own net.

A persistent effort by Drexel resulted in a tough loss for the Bison, putting them at 6-3 overall. The team’s offense was unable to generate sufficient scoring opportunities throughout the game despite chances by Wills, Watson, and Cassie Lawrence ’15.

Although the loss was not a confidence booster for the Orange and Blue, the non-conference match will definitely serve as a learning moment. More importantly, the loss does not interfere with their Patriot League standing and will hopefully serve as motivation for the team to prevent a similar loss from occurring again.

The next Patriot League match will be this upcoming weekend at Holy Cross on Oct. 11.
