The 23rd nationally ranked men’s wrestling team completed a jam-packed weekend with a perfect record, as they defeated Columbia (29-12) at home in the Davis Gym on Jan. 23 and followed that up with a trip to New England on Jan. 25 where they won their two matches against Harvard (26-9) and Brown (28-10). The three wins pushed the Bison’s win streak to six matches, its longest stretch since the team’s return in 2006. The Orange and Blue are now 11-3 on the season.

In the Jan. 23 victory over Columbia, the Bison took 7 out of the 10 decisions, with Paul Petrov ’16, Grim Gonzalez ’17, Tyler Smith ’18, and Victor Lopez ’17 winning the first four decisions, and Tom Sleigh ’18, Tyler Lyster ’15, and Joe Stolfi ’16 winning the last three decisions.

Following their bout with Columbia, the Bison traveled to New England on the afternoon of Jan. 24 to compete with Harvard and Brown. In the Harvard match, the Bison took seven of the 10 decisions with Petrov, Gonzalez, Lopez, Rustin Barrick ’16, Robert Schlitt ’16, Sleigh, and Stolfi all winning decisions.

They followed up their second victory of the weekend with a trip to Brown to compete that same afternoon at 4 p.m. The Bison once again took seven out of the 10 bouts, with Petrov, Gonzalez, Smith, Lopez, Schlitt, Tyler Greene ’17, and Stolfi all finishing the busy weekend with victories against Brown.

Petrov was happy with his team after their performances.

“It was a good weekend for wrestling. We went 3-0 and beat three conference teams. Our team is getting better and better each week. I’m glad to be a captain of a team that works extremely hard and gives it 100 percent all the time,” Petrov said.

The weekend wins allowed the Orange and Blue to surpass their win total from last season. They will take the week off from competition before returning to the mat on Feb. 1 at Bloomsburg.
