Nick Bybel ’16 went 5-0 in singles action and 3-1 in doubles as the Bison played five matches in Florida on March 9-12. He received two awards during the team’s sunshine series: the Corvias Patriot League of the Week and the 5th Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week. His eight wins brought his total record to 26-3 which tied his own program record for wins in a season. With a few more matches to go, Bybel is sure to break the school record.

The Bison started the trip with a bang. They swept Hampton bringing their team record to 4-3, eclipsing last season’s win total. The Orange and Blue hoped to continue their success versus Bethune-Cookman, but unfortunately fell short as Bethune-Cookman edged them by a score of 4-3. The Bison started slow but a 6-3, 6-1 single win by Daniel Wright ’18 got the ball rolling. Bybel and William Szamosszegi ’18 followed up with singles victories. Wright and Szamossezegi’s strong showings are a good sign for the Bison, as both freshman stepped up when they were called.

The team split their next two matches versus Southern Mississippi and St. Cloud State, bringing their record to 5-5. Bybel had the Bison’s single victory in a loss to Southern Mississippi, but the Orange and Blue turned their fortune around against St. Cloud State. The Bison rolled over St. Cloud State by a score of 8-1. In their five singles matches, men’s tennis won 60 out of the 72 games.

The final game in the Florida trip was a loss to Creighton. After a strong victory versus St. Cloud State, the Bison could not hold on, falling by a score of 6-1. Bybel again had the lone singles victory for the Bison in a 6-0, 6-1 match. In their return to Lewisburg on March 18, the Bison dominated Mount St. Mary’s 6-1. This victory puts the Bison’s record at 6-6.
