Wrestling dominates Sacred Heart with 39-0 shutout

The Bison defeated Sacred Heart with a 39-0 victory to begin a six-match road stretch. The Orange and Blue were in control throughout the match on Feb. 7 and improved to 5-0 all-time against Sacred Heart.

The wrestling team won all 10 bouts and tallied six bonus-point victories with a number of standout performances. At 141 pounds, Tyler Smith ’18 won 18-3, forcing a rare technical fall just over four minutes into the bout, and improved to a personal record of 16-9 for the season. Later, Robert Schlitt ’16 won a major decision 12-4 in the 165-pound category.

Rustin Barrick ’16 won his bout 14-3 at 174 pounds for a victory by major decision. Tom Sleigh ’18 and Tyler Greene ’17 also notched major decision triumphs, 16-8 and 10-1, respectively. Barrick improved to 11 consecutive bout victories, while Sleigh improved to eight.

In the 285-pound weight class, Joe Stolfi ’16 took just over a minute and a half to pin his opponent. It was his eighth pin of the year, a team high, and the 60th pin of  his career. Paul Petrov ’16 also had another stellar performance with the team-high bout. Petrov conquered his challenger 10-6 at 125 pounds, bringing him to an impressive 103-34 record for his career.

“Going 10 for 10 always makes for a good day. Our starting lineup is healthy, and we look to perform at our highest level the first and third weekends of March,” assistant coach Kevin LeValley said.

Next up, the wrestling team will compete at American and George Mason on Feb. 13.
