The Bison traveled to Boston University for the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 19-21. Grant Reynolds ’16 and Scott Gulizio ’19 had a few of many standout performances, with the men finishing in fourth place out of 10 total teams. Navy, Boston University, and Army West Point preceded them, respectively. The Orange and Blue fought from the first event to the last and continually supported one another.

“It was a tough meet and we had to work hard for every point we scored. The other teams gave us great competition all weekend and proved to be very talented,” Griffin Robertson ’16 said. “We had a lot of guys hit personal bests and qualify for the IC4A meet, so it was exciting to see our training pay off when it counted most.”

Reynolds earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors after placing second in the 60-meter hurdles. Not only was his time a personal best, but his 8.12 finish is also tied for third-best in school history. Reynolds also finished sixth in the 400-meter dash. In the mid-distance events, Gulizio finished fourth in the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line in 1:51.54. This time is a personal best and now ranks fourth in program history. In the 500-meter dash, Jacob Ashkettle ’17, Anthony Menza ’16, and Robertson each scored—claiming fourth, fifth, and seventh, respectively.

“Although we finished fourth, we went into the meet with a tough mindset and ended up doing quite well in several individual events,” Menza said. “The league is exceptionally good right now, and we are currently in a reloading phase, so we treated this as a stepping-stone to a future league championship. With that being said, we have a lot of work to do if we want to be number one in the league again, so we are treating every meet and every practice as another opportunity to improve and reclaim the top spot.”

John Westwood ’16 also had an extremely successful day, taking sixth in the mile and seventh in the 1,000-meter run. In the field events, Joseph Breen ’17 claimed third place in the shot put with a throw of 54-8. Matthew Fay ’19 finished fifth in the pole vault, while Reggie Harris ’19 finished fifth in the triple jump. Nicholas Lombardo ’18 took the silver medal in the high jump with a mark of 6-10 ¾. He also finished second in the long jump, leaping 24-0 ¾ for a personal-best and new rank as third best in program history.

“The team supported one another each step of the way—we wouldn’t have been able to finish fourth without the hard work and dedication of each team member,” Lombardo said.

As the indoor season comes to a close, several Bison athletes will return to Boston on March 5-6 to compete in the IC4A Indoor Championships.
