For those of you who, like myself, have missed out on watching and staying updated with the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games, you may have missed the major stories. The headlines that drew my attention concern the disputed issues of U.S. gymnast Gabby Douglas and U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte. The two athletes have been accused of behavior that would considerably place America in a negative light. The only difference between the two is that one’s behavior, Lochte’s, was simply shrugged off, while Douglas’ became, according to Bustle, a walking “target” for attack.

Now for a breakdown of what our American competitors have supposedly done.

First off, Douglas, a gold medalist, was scrutinized for her demeanor during the Games this past summer. For example, she was often targeted for her posture during the national anthem, her “poutiness” on the podium, her hairstyles, and her attitude towards fellow competitors.

Lochte, on the other hand, filed a false story of being robbed at gunpoint. However, no robbery actually took place. Rather, Lochte and his friends drunkenly vandalized a gas station and later disputed with security guards. However, Lochte’s behavior was covered up and dismissed by many, labeling him a kid “just having some fun,” even though he is 32.

While simply not smiling and false robbery accounts are on two polar ends of the spectrum, each accusatory instance presented does not represent America well. Where Douglas may lack patriotism, Lochte is depicting America as an endless society of partying, and showing ill respect for others and authority. My feelings toward such events are that of concern for our nation and its representation during such an esteemed global event. Both athletes reflect America in a poor light.
