Women’s tennis wins League opener, falls to Villanova

The Bison women’s tennis team started Patriot League play with a victory on March 24, defeating Colgate by a score of 4-2. The women then fell to Villanova in a non-league competition on March 27 with a score of 4-0. The Bison are now 10-5 on the spring season.

In the matchup against Colgate, Madeline Melch ’18 won her fourth match in a row with a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court six, improving her record to 7-2. Just moments later, fellow teammate Cayla Koch ’21 clinched the team victory with her third consecutive win.

Paige Leavy ’20 improved her record to 9-5 after winning the first single of the day for the Bison. She then joined Lisa Jouravleva ’18 for a 6-1 doubles victory on court one. Mishi Papich ’19 and Sofia Ayuso ’21 also scored a win for the Bison in doubles play. Leavy and Jouravleva are 11-3 on the spring season, while Papich and Ayuso are 5-0.

In the match against Villanova, the Orange and Blue’s five-match winning streak was halted with a 0-4 loss to the Wildcats. Picking up the lone win for the Bison against Villanova were Koch and Emilie Bush ’18. The pair improved to 5-0, maintaining their unbeaten doubles record this season.

Showing a strong performance was Jouravleva, who led in her singles performance until the match was prematurely halted due to inclement weather. In each of the doubles contests the scores were identical, with each duo falling 6-4.

The women’s team strives to remain unbeaten in Patriot League play, as they face Lafayette on April 4 in Easton, Pa.
