Women’s soccer battles in two weekend matchups

The Bison women’s soccer team fought a hard battle against William & Mary on Sept. 6, with the game resulting in a 3-2 loss. The team suffered a second loss to Saint Joseph’s on Sept. 9 by a score of 5-1.

Against the Tribe, after trailing by one goal for nearly 65 minutes of play, the Orange and Blue answered with a header by Carly Baggott ’19 off of a corner kick by Holly Burns ’22. It was Baggot’s first goal of the season.

Less than three minutes after Baggott’s goal, the Bison made their way down the field to earn a penalty kick, a scoring opportunity that Claire Mensi ’22 converted on for her second goal of the season. The Tribe answered in the final minutes with a pair of goals to clinch the win. Goalie Theresa Adu-Attobrah ’20 tallied seven saves in the loss.

The Orange and Blue also fell to the Saint Joseph’s Hawks, 5-1, on Sept. 9. Gabby Bair ’20, scored the lone goal for the Bison, a shot from 30 yards out in the 38th minute, for her first goal of this season.

Despite the result, the Bison competed well with the Hawks, as they finished with a 14-12 lead in shots. The Bison also had nine corner opportunities, compared to the Hawks’ 10 chances. Dani Kaufman ’20 collected four saves for Bucknell.

“While this weekend we did not get the results we wanted, we learned a lot as a team and are extremely motivated for our league games to start,” Tia Zajec ’21 said.

The Bison will take the field once again when they play Lafayette in their first league home game of the season at Emmitt Field at 1 p.m. on Sept. 15.
