The Bison women’s basketball team competed in the Turkey Tip-off at Brown University from Nov. 23 to Nov. 25. The Bison picked up three wins, including a 77-58 win over UMass, a 77-54 win over Fairfield, and a 91-78 victory over Brown. The team improved to a record of 5-2.

Against UMass, the Orange and Blue shot well from long range, tying a program record with 14 3-pointers in a single game.  Guard Abby Kapp ’21 tallied five of these, contributing to her career-high 19 points for the Bison. Other key contributors included forward Kaitlyn Slagus ’19 and guards Kyi English ’19 and Ally Johnson ’21, with 18, 14, and nine points, respectively.

The Bison then topped Fairfield 77-54 on Nov. 24 in the second game of the tournament. Forward Ellie Mack ’20 led the Bison with 19 points. Ten different players earned points for the Orange and Blue in the matchup. Kapp proved to be a huge spark for the offense again, scoring 12 points.

Building on their prior momentum, the team defeated Brown 91-78 on Nov. 25 to complete a successful sweep in the Turkey Tip-off tournament.

Both sides fought hard in a closely contested first half. Going into the second half, the Bison trailed the Bears, 48-43. Coming up huge for the team was Slagus, as she had a career high of 30 points in the matchup against Brown. Kapp and Mack also provided double-digit points, and Kate Walker ’19 contributed nine.

“Playing three games in three days really challenged us mentally and physically,” English said. “We showed that we were able to push through, and even though we were tired, we were able to find different ways to win.”

After learning a lot from the tournament and gaining valuable experience, the team is excited to keep improving throughout the season.

“Overall, we played really well this weekend. This definitely helped us gain confidence and our identity as a team and showed us some areas where we can improve on,” English said. “We are super excited to see how much more we can improve as the season continues.”

The Bison took on St. Bonaventure on the road on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m., and will face Iona at home on Dec. 2 at 2 p.m.
