The Bison men’s tennis team escaped winter when they headed south to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to play two matches on Jan. 19. The team opened with a 1-6 loss to Wofford College. Despite the loss, Ethan Jacobs ’22 pulled out an individual win over Wofford during his collegiate debut, securing his victory in three sets.

It was a great environment to kick off my college career because everyone fought hard, and cheered each other on,” Jacobs said.

The Orange and Blue then played the UNC Tar Heels, a nationally ranked team, for the second year in a row. They dropped all five singles matches for a 0-5 loss.

“Many of the matches were competitive,” Jacobs said. “I feel that it’s beneficial to have started off our season playing two very good teams because it will help prepare ourselves for the rest of the season.”

The men’s team will play at the NJIT Invitational on Jan. 26-27. The Bison women’s tennis team, whose Jan. 20 match at Penn State was postponed due to weather, will next take on St. Bonaventure on Feb. 2 at 5:30.
