The Bison women’s tennis team went 1-1 this weekend, pulling out a big 4-3 win on Friday against Morgan State University before suffering a 6-1 loss against the Binghamton Bearcats on Sunday. Their success against Morgan State earned the Bison their fifth straight win; however, the team dropped to an overall record of 6-3 after facing the Bearcats.

Daniela Bellini ’22, Sofia Ayuso ’21 and Rachel Carroll ’21 earned wins for the Bison in the number one, three and six singles category, respectively, against Morgan State. With her fifth consecutive win, Bellini remains undefeated this spring season.

Paige Leavy ’20 gave a great effort against Morgan State’s Averiana Mitchell, the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, but ultimately lost the match, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.

In the doubles category, the Bison lost in the number one doubles but won in the two and three doubles matches. Jill Auteri ’20 and Ayuso won in the number two doubles with a 6-3 decision. Meanwhile, Chloe Zilkha ’23 and Carroll earned their first doubles win this spring with a score of 6-3 at number three.

Coming off of a strong showing against Morgan State, the Bison struggled to find the victory in their match against Binghamton. Only Leavy collected points for the Bison in the singles category at number three. Leavy and Bellini won their doubles match against Binghamton. The pair of Leavy and Bellini won at the number one spot and collected the only points of the day in the doubles category.

“We had two pretty tough matches, as we were down a player due to illness so the lineup was very different from how it normally is. The match against Morgan State was close but we were able to pull off the win. When we played Binghamton we had pretty close scores all around, but when it came down to those final points Binghamton managed to execute their shots just a little better than us,” Bellini said. “We don’t have another match until the end of next week during spring break when we’re in California, but we’re very excited to be able to play outside and enjoy our time in California.”

As the Bison gear up for spring break matches, the women’s tennis team will be heading to California where they will face UC Riverside on March 12 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on March 13. These matches are crucial, as they will be the last tune-ups the Bison will have before they begin Patriot League play.
