Bison Women’s Tennis continued their spring season this past weekend with a match against Hofstra University at the Central PA Tennis Center.
This is the Bison’s second week back from a short winter off-season.
“My philosophy for winter break is to just rest the mind and body: focus on family, friends and resting up.” Head Coach Tammy Cecchini said. “Tennis is also different because it is more an individual ‘team’ sport, where each player has to come up with their own schedule, especially over break.”
While the Bison were supposed to have another match against Howard, it had to be canceled due to weather. The Orange and Blue played their best against Hofstra, but fell short of victory, losing 2-5 against the Lions. This puts the team 0-3 for the beginning of the season.
“Right now I like to say our team is going through ‘growing pains.’ Besides Whitney (King), everyone is playing a new position, even our returners.” Coach Cecchini shared. “We are focusing on doubles and working on taking risks, and seeing the fun, excitement and confidence as matches progress has been wonderful.”
The Central PA Tennis Center was bustling Saturday afternoon as the courts filled up. Duo Anna Lajos ’25 and Cameron King ’28 played first, stealing a sweet victory 6-4. However, Whitney King ’25 and Abby Platt ’26 lost their winning streak with a defeat from Hofstra. Pair Caroline Marcus ’25 and Natalie Devraj ’28 also suffered a 7-4 tiebreaker loss.
Yet the Bison changed tides after the start of singles matches. King won at No.1 6-2, 6-4, while Tori Allen ’27 also claimed victory at No. 4. 7-5, 6-3. Platt fell just short at No. 2.
The day’s final results came from No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 matches. Lajos won her second set at No. 3 6-2, but lost 4-6 in the third. Riley Jennings ’28 took on her opponent in three, where Jennings closed the first set 6-2. However, a comeback by the Lions left Jennings with a singles loss. Jennings also had the final match and pushed for three sets again, but a 7-5 edged victory by her opponent sealed the win for Hofstra.
The Bison will be back in action this Friday, Feb. 7 for a match against Washington and Lee University in Lexington.
