Bucknell Loves Our Melons!

Caitlin Maloney, Staff Writer

Love Your Melon is an apparel company based in the United States with the mission to give a hat to every child fighting cancer. The organization focuses on that mission through a buy one, give one program in which every hat bought from their company provides a hat to a child battling cancer. This organization was recently brought to the University by Emily Nocera ’18, Sarah Galzerano ’18, Emma Holt ’16, and Louise Rahr ’16.

“Every year there are 15,000 children in the country given new cancer diagnoses. Love Your Melon has reserved more than 45,000 hats to donate to children battling cancer in the United States through a buy one, give one program,” Holt said.

Not only do the proceeds raised selling hats go toward providing children with hats of equal value, but “50 percent of net proceeds from every Love Your Melon product sold are donated to the Pinky Swear Foundation and CureSearch,” Holt said.

These are two non-profit organizations that also seek to alleviate the suffering of childhood cancer, the first through financial support to families that have children with cancer, and the latter through innovative research methods specifically geared toward cancer in children.

The group at the University seeks to further the reach of the company by selling hats to students and faculty.

“The more we sell, the more opportunities we have to give back. For every hat purchased through our organization, and specifically the Bucknell Love Your Melon Crew, our group will get the opportunity to visit a member of our community battling cancer or go to a hospital and personally deliver a hat,” Holt said.

The group is off to a great start after selling 69 hats in their first three weeks on campus. With the weather getting colder, the organization has plans to continue to sell hats on campus at the LC Mall, sports games, and the Bertrand Library, among other locations. The 20 Love Your Melon Campus Crew members will be seen around campus selling the hats.

The Love Your Melon Campus Crew members encourage you to help them “put smiles on children’s faces and let children with cancer know that the Bucknell community is behind them in their fight!” Holt said.
