Football hosted Georgetown this past Saturday with hopes to wipe away a two-game road losing streak, but a last-second pick-six by the Hoyas handed the Bison their third straight loss, 31-24.
The Bison went scoreless through the first quarter, with a missed field goal and a punt plaguing their first two possessions. Georgetown was able to find the end zone once to take a 7-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Orange and Blue were able to get on the board right away to begin the second quarter, thanks to a 49-yard run by Tariq Thomas ’28 on the first play of the quarter to set the Bison up for a score. Quarterback Christopher Dietrich ’28 started his third straight outing in place of the injured Ralph Rucker IV ’26, and found Chuck Kreinbucher ’26 from one yard out to tie the contest at seven apiece.
The Hoyas responded with a touchdown of their own to take a 14-7 lead, but the Orange and Blue found an offensive rhythm and capped off a following 10-play, 76-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run by Dietrich to tie the score at 14-14 heading into the halftime break.
The third quarter saw little action, as the Bison punted on three of their four possessions, followed by a turnover on downs. Georgetown scored one more time to take a 21-14 lead heading into the final 15 minutes, where the Orange and Blue nearly pulled off the comeback effort.
Georgetown tacked on a field goal to begin the fourth, taking a 10-point advantage over the Bison with just under 12 minutes to go. However, the Orange and Blue responded once again, crossing the pylon on a 20-yard connection from Dietrich to TJ Cadden ’27 to make the tally 24-21.
After the Bison forced a punt on Georgetown’s next possession, they were left with a chance to take the lead or tie the game. An 11-play, 63-yard drive was capped off by a 27-yard field goal by Matt Schearer ’26 to tie the game at 24 apiece.
The Orange and Blue forced a punt once again on the Hoyas, leaving them with a chance to win the game dramatically, taking over on offense with under a minute to go. However, on second down with just 12 seconds to play, the Bison fans were left in disbelief, as an interception by Dietrich was taken all the way back to the house to give the Hoyas a 31-24 victory right at the buzzer.
The heartbreaker hands the Bison their third straight loss, bringing them to 4-5 overall on the season and 1-3 in Patriot League action. Dietrich finished the matchup, completing 18-of-30 (60%) passes for 222 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Thomas led the way on the ground with 12 carries for 93 yards, and Cadden led the receivers with five receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown. The Orange and Blue head back on the road after the bye for its third road game in four opportunities, as they will face Fordham on Nov. 8.
